In short
The NatureFitFlorence wolf census takes place in the Casentino Forests National Park, setting off from Fonte del Borbotto at San Godenzo. You go out in the late afternoon and stay into the evening to use the wolf howling technique: a call is made and you listen for whether the pack answers. Places are limited and booking is required.

What wolf howling is
It is a non-invasive monitoring technique: a howl is played or imitated and you listen for an answer. Wolves reply to defend their territory, and the reply yields information about the pack's presence and the number of individuals, cubs included.
How the evening goes
You set off in the late afternoon, reach the listening points and wait. Most of the time is spent in silence, in the dark, in the cold. Nothing may happen — and often nothing does. When the pack does answer, it is not something you forget.
What you need
- Warm layered clothing: you stand still in the dark for hours
- A head torch, ideally with a red light
- Boots and long trousers
- Patience, and a willingness to go home having heard nothing
This is monitoring work, not an excursion to see wolves. The wolf is a protected and elusive species: the aim is to collect data, not sightings.
