In short
The NatureFitFlorence Monte Falterona hike takes place in the Casentino Forests National Park, meeting at 9.30 am with lunch at Rifugio Borbotto. The route suits children from eight years up, making it one of the few outings that works for a whole family. Led by Alessandra Caselli, a licensed environmental hiking guide.

Where the Arno begins
Falterona is the mountain where the river that crosses Florence is born. It is one of those facts you learn at school and then forget, until you stand in front of the spring itself: a trickle you could step over.
An outing for families
The route has no exposed passages or technical sections, and lunch at Rifugio Borbotto breaks the day in half. That is why we suggest it to anyone who wants to bring their children: from eight years up the pace holds without difficulty.
What to bring
- Hiking boots, not trainers
- Water, at least a litre and a half each
- A windproof jacket: weather changes fast at altitude
- Lunch is at the refuge, but something to nibble along the way helps
